Flying with kids on long-haul flights can feel like an endurance test, but with the right preparation, it can be an enjoyable experience for everyone. Whether you’re heading to a bucket-list destination or visiting family abroad, these tried-and-true strategies will help ensure a smooth journey from takeoff to touchdown.
Timing is everything when flying with kids. If possible, book flights that align with their natural sleep schedules to maximize rest during the journey.
Overnight flights increase the chance that younger kids will sleep for a portion of the trip.
Snacks: Avoid sugar overload and opt for protein-rich, mess-free snacks like cheese sticks, granola bars, and crackers.
Entertainment: Download movies, audiobooks, and games in advance.
Comfort Items: Bring a small pillow, blanket, or stuffed animal.
Hygiene Kit: Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, extra diapers (if needed), and a change of clothes for spills or accidents.
Let kids pick out a few special travel treats or toys to keep them excited about the flight.
Airplane temperatures fluctuate, and comfort is essential for long hours in transit.
Soft, breathable clothing
Slip-on shoes for quick removal at security
Extra socks for warmth
For overnight flights, dressing kids in pajamas can help signal bedtime and encourage sleep.
Many airlines offer early boarding for families with young kids, but waiting on the plane too long before takeoff can lead to restless little ones.
If traveling with two adults, have one board early with luggage while the other lets the kids run around until the last possible moment.
Takeoff and landing can be uncomfortable for kids due to pressure changes.
Babies & Toddlers: Offer a pacifier or bottle.
Older Kids: Encourage chewing gum, drinking water, or yawning.
Bring a few lollipops as a backup for reluctant little chewers!
Choosing the right seating arrangement can make a world of difference.
Window seats for kids who love watching outside.
Aisle seats for parents who may need quick bathroom trips.
Bulkhead seats for extra legroom.
Some airlines offer bassinet seats for babies—request these early!
Jet lag can be tough on kids (and adults!).
Start adjusting bedtime by an hour each day before departure.
Keep kids awake until local bedtime upon arrival.
Get plenty of sunlight at your destination to reset body clocks.
Long-haul flights with kids don’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation and the right mindset, you can turn the journey into part of the adventure. The key is keeping kids comfortable, entertained, and well-fed while planning for any hiccups along the way. Safe travels!
