Planning a family trip is always an exciting challenge, especially when you’ve got a blank slate for the first week of your itinerary. With a set date to arrive in Basel for week two of our European adventure, we had some serious debating to do about where to kick things off. The contenders? Paris, Southern Germany, or Northern Switzerland.
Each option had its unique allure, and as a family of five, we factored in everything from flight costs to past experiences and the types of adventures that excite us. Here’s how the debate played out and why Paris ultimately won stage one of our trip.
Switzerland was an obvious contender. My wife, Jen, and I were just there last year, and she’s spent a lot of time exploring its stunning landscapes over the years. It’s a place we both adore, with endless opportunities for hiking, charming villages, and Alpine views that take your breath away.
But there was a catch: our kids have never been to Switzerland. While we’d love to share this beautiful country with them, we worried it might feel more like revisiting familiar ground rather than diving into new territory as a family. Plus, since we’re planning to spend week two in Switzerland, starting there as well felt like we’d be missing an opportunity to explore somewhere else.
The Black Forest region of Southern Germany quickly became another strong contender. Flying into Zurich and renting a car to explore this area offered the perfect mix of accessibility, affordability, and adventure.
Why It Was Tempting:
The Black Forest region is packed with outdoor activities like hiking and scenic drives, which fit perfectly with our family’s love of nature.
Towns like Heidelberg and Freiburg promised just enough history and charm to balance out the outdoor time.
Logistically, it was straightforward—fly into Zurich, drive into Germany, and meander our way toward Basel.
Why We Hesitated:
While Southern Germany sounded wonderful, we realized it might lack a certain "wow" factor to kick off our adventure. We wanted the first week to feel truly special and different, and as much as we’d enjoy this option, it didn’t quite match the excitement of the third contender.
Finally, there was Paris. The City of Light needs no introduction, and even though Jen and I have both been before, none of the kids have had the chance to experience its magic.
Why It Was Tempting:
Paris offers an endless array of sights and experiences: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre-Dame, and the Seine are just the beginning.
It’s a cultural and historical powerhouse, and we wanted the kids to have a chance to soak it all in.
Flights to Paris were relatively affordable compared to Zurich, which gave this option a practical edge for a family of five.
What Made Us Pause:
Jen and I were torn about whether it was selfish to revisit Paris instead of heading somewhere completely new. Would it feel redundant for us as adults, even though it would be a first for the kids?
In the end, Paris emerged as the winner for a few key reasons:
It’s Paris: There’s a reason it’s one of the most visited cities in the world. It felt like the perfect way to start the trip with a mix of culture, history, and unforgettable moments for the kids.
Family-Friendly Appeal: From climbing the Eiffel Tower to hunting for pastries in the local boulangeries, Paris offers something for everyone.
Ease of Travel: Affordable flights and a central location made Paris the most practical choice to begin our European journey.
New for the Kids: Even though Jen and I have been before, this trip isn’t just about us. Seeing Paris through the kids’ eyes will make it feel fresh and exciting all over again.
With Paris now set as our starting point, the rest of the trip is falling into place. The first week will be spent exploring the city’s iconic landmarks, indulging in French cuisine, and maybe even taking a day trip or two to nearby regions. Afterward, we’re thinking we'll head to Basel, where Switzerland’s stunning landscapes and outdoor adventures await.
Lessons Learned from the Debate
This decision-making process reminded us of a few important lessons about family travel:
Balance Familiarity and Discovery: Revisiting places you’ve loved can feel brand new when you experience them with your kids.
Practicality Matters: Sometimes the easiest option is the best, especially when traveling with a group.
Listen to Everyone’s Input: Family travel is about making memories together, so every voice counts in the decision-making process.
What about you? Would you have chosen Paris, Southern Germany, or Northern Switzerland to start your trip? We’d love to hear your thoughts, especially if you’ve traveled to any of these areas!
For now, Paris is calling, and we can’t wait to share our first week’s adventures with you. Stay tuned!
Planning Our European Adventure: Part 1 - The Journey Begins
As a family, we’ve been fortunate to explore many corners of the world, making friends and memories along the way. A few years ago, while visiting friends from Europe, an idea began to take root. Over long conversations, we hatched a plan: we'd immerse our kids in each other’s countries, sharing not only our homes but also our cultures. Fast forward to 2025, and that plan is finally starting to come to life...
