Freiburg, with its medieval architecture and vibrant university vibe, was initially on our list. But the idea of staying in a bustling city started to feel counterintuitive to our desire for tranquility. Instead, we've chosen to base ourselves in a quaint village just outside Freiburg.

This shift allows us to experience the authentic charm of the Black Forest region. Waking up to the sounds of nature, strolling through cobblestone streets, and engaging with local traditions—it's the kind of immersive experience we crave. Plus, we're still within easy reach of day trips to Colmar and Strasbourg, ensuring we don't miss out on the Alsace region's delights.

Embracing the Outdoors in Appenzell, Switzerland

Our journey then takes us to Appenzell, a picturesque town nestled in the Swiss Alps. Known for its rolling green hills, traditional Swiss architecture, and rich cultural heritage, Appenzell offers the perfect backdrop for our family's outdoor adventures.

We're particularly excited about hiking in the Alpstein region, where trails like the one to Seealpsee Lake promise breathtaking views and memorable family moments. The area is also renowned for its cheese-making traditions, and we can't wait to indulge in some local delicacies.

Black Forest Stay in Burkheim: Slower Mornings, Sweeter Memories

Instead of staying in the bustling city of Freiburg, we’ve chosen to settle into the picturesque old town of Burkheim, part of the Vogtsburg region in the heart of Germany’s Kaiserstuhl wine country. This decision has turned out to be one of our favorite pivots—offering charm, quiet, and a deeply local experience that a city hotel just can’t match.

Our Airbnb here is tucked into the cobblestone streets of Burkheim, where vine-covered walls, half-timbered houses, and medieval remnants greet you at every corner. The home itself is bright, family-friendly, and stylishly renovated—with a cozy balcony that’s practically begging for sunset views and a glass of local wine. With room for all five of us to spread out and a kitchen to make breakfasts at our own pace, it feels like a true home away from home.

What we love most, though, is the rhythm of the town. Burkheim moves at its own pace—slower, sweeter. Locals stop to chat in the market square, and each winding alleyway seems to lead to a new discovery. From here, day trips to Freiburg, Colmar, and Strasbourg are within easy reach, but honestly, we’re just as happy walking the vineyards, biking the local paths, or simply wandering the ancient lanes of Burkheim itself.

Swiss Alpine Retreat in the Heart of Appenzell (Gästehaus Koller): To truly experience the rhythm of Swiss village life, we’ve booked a stay at Gästehaus Koller, a cozy bed and breakfast right in the town of Appenzell. This family-run guesthouse combines the warmth of traditional hospitality with an unbeatable location—just a short stroll from the village center yet nestled in a peaceful setting with sweeping views of the Appenzell hills.

Each morning, we’ll wake to the aroma of freshly baked bread and local cheeses, part of the generous homemade breakfast served by our hosts. From here, it’s easy to explore hiking trails in the Alpstein mountains, drop into artisan cheese shops, or just wander the streets lined with colorful facades and centuries-old buildings.

Staying in the town rather than the outskirts means we’ll be part of the daily pulse of Appenzell—sharing smiles with locals, browsing farmers' markets, and maybe even catching a bit of yodeling or a traditional parade if our timing is right.
