There’s a special kind of chaos that happens when you land in Europe after an overnight flight with three kids in tow. Your brain says “let’s explore,” but your body is somewhere over the Atlantic, still trying to process airport peanuts and pretzels. That was us on Day 1 in Milan—disoriented, sweaty (really sweaty), but also excited to be back in Europe.
We touched down at Malpensa airport on a bright, blistering July morning, kicking off our 2-week adventure across four countries. And while Milan was just our first stop, it gave us a full initiation into European summer travel: jet lag, 100°F heat, cobblestone wandering, and—thankfully—gelato on every corner. It was chaotic, hilarious, and just the right kind of “off-schedule” magic to ease us into the trip.
Milan sometimes gets overshadowed by Italy’s more tourist-famous cities like Rome and Florence, but we purposely built in two nights there at the start—both to explore and to recover from the flight. We weren’t aiming for perfection. We just wanted to eat well, see a few iconic sights, and let ourselves adjust to European rhythm.
We stayed in an apartment near the University of Milan, just a few blocks from the famous Duomo. It had passable AC—a huge win in Europe—and enough room for the kids to sprawl out while we figured out where the heck we left the travel adapters. It was close enough to the heart of the action, but it gave us space and quiet, which is exactly what we needed after the red-eye flight.
After settling into our apartment and convincing the kids to change out of airplane clothes, we ventured into the city with no real agenda other than stay awake. We wandered through shady side streets and wide-open piazzas, weaving through waves of tourists posing for pictures.
We ended up at a tiny pizza shop where we devoured our first (and definitely not last) pizzas. It was the kind of moment you couldn’t plan—just the five of us, quietly soaking in our surroundings, and already trying to remember enough Italian to say “please” and “thank you.”
The next morning, after a surprisingly solid night of sleep (thank you blackout shades), we tackled our one “official” sight in Milan: the Duomo. We bought tickets that allowed us to explore the cathedral, the crypt and the archaeological area. The detail in the architecture is mind-blowing, and seeing it all from inside felt like a reward. Pro Tip: Inside the Duomo, and especially the areas below the ground floor, are much cooler than standing outside in the blistering sun!
This might’ve been one of our favorite activities of the entire trip. We took a pizza and gelato-making class as a family, and it was everything we hoped it would be—hands-on, hilarious, and delicious. Watching the kids knead dough and devour their gelato felt like a “this is why we travel” moment.
The best part? Sitting down together at the end to eat our creations. No phones, no rush, just good food and great company. It was one of those unexpected highlights that reminded us that doing something together—not just seeing something—creates the memories that last.
Adjust your sleep schedule in advance. We tried to gradually shift our bedtime earlier in the days leading up to departure—it helped a lot.
Don’t over-plan your arrival day. Keep things flexible. Wandering and snacking work great when everyone’s a little fried.
Stay hydrated. The heat was intense, and with all the walking, we needed constant water breaks.
Book AC. Seriously, don’t assume European lodging has air conditioning. We were grateful our Airbnb did.
Public transit is your friend. Milan’s metro is easy to use—and kids ride free! It’s a budget-saver and leg-saver.
Start traditions early. We decided Day 1 that every day in Italy deserved at least one gelato and 1 pizza. That rule stuck, and it made the kids very happy.
Looking back, Milan gave us exactly what we needed at the beginning of our European journey: a bit of structure, a lot of carbs, and a whole new rhythm to slip into as a family. It wasn’t about seeing everything—it was about slowing down, sharing messy gelato smiles, and reminding ourselves that travel is not about perfection. It’s about showing up, even when you're exhausted and hot, and making memories anyway.
We got lost. We laughed. We melted a little. But we were in Italy—together.

Part 7: Beyond The Brochure: The Real Lake Como
We left Milan sweaty, but over our jet lag, and excited for some fresh air and open space. The plan? Rent a car, head north, and ease into the next phase of the trip. What we found wasn’t flashy or famous. We weren’t staying in a luxury villa or spotting celebrities on boats. Instead, we hiked up and down steep stone paths, swam in cold water that made us feel alive again, and accidentally crashed a local food and music festival that turned out to be one of our favorite nights of the trip. This wasn’t the postcard version of Lake Como. It was better...

Part 5: Embracing the Art of the Pivot
If there's one thing we've learned from planning our 2025 European adventure, it's this: the best journeys often begin with a change of plans. Our original itinerary had us zigzagging across countries, but as we delved deeper into the logistics, we realized that our vision of a relaxing, immersive family trip was getting lost amidst the hustle. So, we took a step back, reevaluated, and made some heartfelt decisions to slow down and savor the moments. Here's how our revised plan is shaping up...
